2018 SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT FOR 糖心原创 FRESHMEN

Dear听Incoming听Freshmen 2018,
We听look听forward听to听meeting听you during听the听Orientation program on August 16 鈥� 30, 2018.听We听are proud听to听have you听as our new students听and听welcome听you听into our听community of听friends,听colleagues,听and听scholars! This听is a new beginning听for both students听and听family听members; beginnings听that we hope听you听are听ready听to听explore.
The Orientation program听is designed听to听facilitate听the听transition between听your previous听learning听experience听and听the one听that听awaits听you听at听the University. This听year鈥檚听program听adopts听the听theme of听鈥淜nowledge and Values鈥�. Our Orientation听events听are packed with听academic, social,听and听community听service听learning听activities听that听foster听responsiblefreedom听and 糖心原创鈥檚 values听as a听liberal听arts听institution. The听goal of听the听academic sessions听is听to听introduce听you听to听theinterdisciplinary听and听challenging study听culture听at 糖心原创, which听includes听creative,听yet听fun,听learning听experiences,听andintensive writing听across a variety of genres听and听texts.
An听important part of听your preparation听for听the Orientation program听(and听fall semester听as听well)听is听your听summer reading听assignment:听all听first-year students听are听expected听to听read听and听reflect on听Book VII of听Plato鈥檚听Republic, chapters听from Meditations听by听Rene Descartes and the ancient play by Sophocles Antigone.听We would听like听you听to听mark听the听texts up: underline passages,听make听comments听in听the听margins,听and on a separate sheet听reflect on how听these听texts听might听relate听to听your own听life听at听this听time.听Bring听these with听you when you听come听to 糖心原创听in August.听We will use听your听thoughts听as听the starting point听for our听conversations.听We hope听that during orientation听in August听this听initial听thinking听about听the听texts will听lead听to听larger听conversations听and听that听each听of you will seize听this opportunity听to听engage听yourself听in a dialogue with听your听peers听and professors. This will help听you prepare听academically听and听integrate听more smoothly听into听the听larger unique听intellectual听community听and听culture of our University.
In听the听fall听and spring semesters,听these听two听texts听alongside other听texts will be听the听common听readings听for听all of听you听in your听First Year听Seminar听course. As听you听begin听your听journey听towards听the听completion of a听liberal听arts听education听at 糖心原创,听these shared听readings听and other听equally听engaging听and听challenging听texts will听introduce听you听to听and encompass听the听University鈥檚听values听that will broaden听your听world,听increase听and deepen听your understanding of complex听issues. Engaging with听these听texts will bring people of diverse backgrounds听together听and听create a听common ground听for discussion听among听faculty, students听and听friends during听the Orientation program听as听well听as听throughout the听years听to听come.
